We’re looking for a highly motivated Senior Underwriting Manager to join our growing Novo Insurance team. This position will report to the VP of Insurance Products with the primary job function of managing P&C Personal Lines support and underwriting to minimize loss ratio and increase profitability.

This role can be hybrid (preferred) or remote.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and direct activities of the Personal Auto underwriting unit to ensure overall operational effectiveness of the business unit
  • Represent and support underwriting rules, guidelines and business objectives of the Company to underwriters, policyholders, marketing personnel and agents.
  • Manage and develop team members including providing training, performance feedback, conducting disciplinary actions, team member communications, and monitoring work product
  • Receive and review all complaints and prepare appropriate responses to the Department of Insurance and the customer
  • Review and update policies/procedures and workflows; Partner with other departments to create and update Underwriting Manual
  • Solicit feedback from other departments to ensure streamlined and automated workflows and processes to drive and improve efficiency in the underwriting process
  • Collaborate with the Customer Experience team to ensure all underwriting processes fit into an exceptional customer experience
  • Point person on the team for day-to-day problem solving, including escalations, and acting as a liaison between the frontline customer support staff and leadership to drive continuous improvements
  • Use independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.
  • Prepare and analyze operating results relative to established guidelines, and takes appropriate action to improve performance, productivity, profitability and maximize efficiency
  • Reviews potential new and existing business in accordance with company guidelines and growth/profit goals
  • Applies underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and complies with insurance laws and regulations
  • Provides technical direction to underwriting staff regarding application, endorsement and renewal processing, verification of application data, special handling and additional information needed to underwrite policies
  • Assists management with development of basic objectives, procedures, and operations
  • Assist to bridge the gap between the customer and the brand, by offering feedback and competitive analysis to help improve the process of getting a quote, filing a claim, completing a policy change and paying a bill.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction and loyalty rates increase, gaining more recommendations from those customers via web/app/ social by working with product/UW, Product Marketing and Customer Experience team and provide the content to map to that journey

Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field or equivalent experience
  • Insurance industry designation (e.g. CPCU) is preferred
  • 5 - 7 years personal lines P&C underwriting experience or equivalent combination of education/experience
  • 3+ years managerial experience
  • Extensive experience in personal lines auto underwriting
  • Expert in underwriting data analytics
  • Expert at collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders
  • A startup mindset and drive to work problems until seeing business impact
  • Progression toward certification in area of expertise preferred; appropriate certifications could include Associate in Underwriting (AU), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), Program in General Insurance (INS) or Associate of Risk Management (ARM).
  • Ability to develop and strengthen customer relationships
  • Ability to analyze risk and adhere to underwriting standards for risk selection and profitability.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, time management and leadership skills
  • Requires regular exercise of independent judgment to make complex decisions beyond the scope of established guidelines and parameters of underwriting
  • Strong design and user sensibilities

 

**Compensation**

The base salary range for this role is $160,000 – $220,000. Your base salary will be determined based on your location, experience, and the pay of employees in similar positions.
